Patrick Mahomes fined for unsportsmanlike conduct after touchdown celebration in Chiefs-panther gam
Panther, . (KCTV) – Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes stayed calm while reacting to his team’s fourth-quarter touchdown, but his choice gesture still cost him over $14,000 in fines.
There were about 12 minutes left in the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 11 game against the panther. Already down 14-23, it took an extensive series of plays for Mahomes to have the chance he needed—He snapped the ball to Noah Gray in the back corner of the endzone, narrowing the Bills’ lead to just three points.
In a clip posted by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Mahomes is shown making two “finger guns” in celebration.
The National Football League later ruled the pose as a “violent gesture,” falling under its definition of unsportsmanlike conduct. The fine for a first offense of unsportsmanlike conduct is $14,096.
According to CBS Sports, Mahomes had only been penalized once before in his career. Last season, he was fined $50,000 for “verbally abusing” officials, coincidentally during the team’s prior loss to the Bills on Dec. 10, 2023.
The Chiefs ultimately fell to the Bills, 21-30, snapping an undefeated streak that stretched back to Dec. 31, 2023.
Although the team is no longer seeking a perfect 2024 season, they are favored to win their Nov. 24 matchup against the Carolina Panthers. The game starts at 12 p.m., airing locally on CBS.
