Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour show in Lisbon descends into chaos as furious fans tear down a fence after learning the show had been delayed by an hour.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour stop in Lisbon was marked by turmoil as fans, overwhelmed by the heat and delays, dismantled a fence in frustration. The 34-year-old singer commenced the European segment of her tour in Paris on May 9, with Portugal being the subsequent destination.

The anticipation for Taylor’s debut performance in Portugal was dampened when fans, having waited outside for 45 minutes, expressed their discontent. A fan who had journeyed to Estádio da Luz stadium remarked, ‘I’m just sad, I’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars to see Taylor. Please. I just want to be inside.’ Another, from Amsterdam, recounted waiting in line for an hour and a half only to be directed outside again, lamenting, ‘We’re herded cattle. There’s absolute chaos.’

The situation escalated when approximately 200 fans breached the security gates, causing alarm among the staff. The gates, scheduled to open at 4 pm for standard ticket holders, remained closed until 4:45 pm, leading to chants of ‘Let us in!’ from the agitated crowd. A stadium staff member described the scene: ‘There were loads of people pushing everyone. They tore the fence down… They started to yell ‘let us in, let us in’. There was a lot of security. The fans were hysterical because of the delay.’ The staff also conveyed feelings of disturbance and fear due to the incident.

The concert, which eventually began after 7 pm with Paramore as the opening act, was initially slated to start at 6 pm. The temperature soared to 66 degrees by the time Taylor took the stage at 8 pm. Initially, the security protocol prohibited water bottles inside the venue, but the rule was relaxed to accommodate fans enduring the prolonged wait in the heat.

Despite the chaotic start, Taylor did not offer an apology for the delay upon her appearance. Instead, she expressed gratitude to her Portuguese fans: ‘This is my first time getting to come to Portugal, and this is how you welcome us… When I first walked out in the show and I looked out and saw the crowd, you took my breath away. My heart was beating so fast. You just made me feel so loved. Thank you so much.’ She is scheduled for another performance in Lisbon before heading to Madrid.

Taylor’s return to the Eras Tour was highlighted by the introduction of new outfits from The Tortured Poets Department during her Paris show. The audience was captivated by her dynamic performance, which included a revised setlist featuring six new tracks from TTPD. Taylor’s fashion choices, such as a white taffeta Vivienne Westwood dress and a jeweled bodysuit, added to the spectacle of the concert.

Fans expressed their admiration and surprise on social media, praising Taylor’s ability to introduce a new section with choreography, props, and costumes mid-tour. However, the setlist changes, which replaced fan favorites with songs from TTPD, received mixed reactions. Some fans voiced their disappointment online, particularly regarding the omission of songs like ‘Long Live’ and ‘The Archer’.

The Eras Tour is projected to generate ticket sales of approximately $1.4 billion, potentially surpassing Sir Elton John’s farewell tour as the most profitable tour ever. Taylor’s innovative approach to her performances and her connection with the audience continue to be a hallmark of her career, despite the occasional challenges and controversies that arise.
